INFORMATION FOR FUNDERS
Project Summary
The Whitehawk Inn project is based in a converted pub within the deprived area of East Brighton, delivering services from a bright and vibrant learning and work hub. Since 1999 we have worked with over 6,342 residents and we expect to work with approx 800 residents a year, of whom more than 500 undertake training or job related activities. Through working with partners from the statutory, private and third sector we provide a ‘through service’ from outreach and engagement, identifying needs and developing individual actions plan, training and employment activities.
Core Activities
• We offer IAG on an open access to residents of Brighton and Hove, particularly around issues of health, training and employment.
• We provide a training programme via brokerage with local training organisation.
• Local residents are engaged through a range of outreach activities and by supporting existing community groups and setting up new ones. We also have a large number of partners in all sectors.
• We provide support for learners – crèche and transport costs and bursaries for course fees as well as a study support club, mentors for individual learners in need of extra help and classroom assistants who provide support for the tutor and learners.
• We provide volunteering opportunities for up to 20 residents a year.
• Through our Job Club we give 1:1 support focusing on skills and activities aimed at people going back to work.
• We run an Internet café which also provides social space for learners and for the public.
We have previously been funded through partnerships with partners (JobCentre Plus, training providers) and through ESF, SRB, New Deal for Communities, LSC and more recently through Working Neighbourhood Fund and Dept. of Health funding.
Target Groups
We currently focus our outreach & support for all adult residents of the NDC and Neighbourhood Renewal areas of East Brighton & have an excellent track record of supporting people who experience the well documented barriers associated with poverty, disability & ethnic background; we have been key to the successful launch of two community groups.
